Your fair-housing protections, in plain language
The federal Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in the sale, rental, financing or advertising of housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), familial status (such as having children under 18 or being pregnant), or disability. That covers things like refusing to sell or rent, steering people toward or away from particular areas, setting different terms or prices, and publishing housing ads that indicate a preference based on any of those characteristics.
The North Carolina State Fair Housing Act provides the same core protections under state law, so complaints can also be pursued through state channels. These laws apply to real-estate firms, agents, landlords, lenders and advertisers — including websites like this one.
How this platform's comparisons stay neutral
Our tools are built so that housing information is organized around criteria you control, never around who you are:
- You pick the criteria. Comparisons use only the objective factors you select — such as budget range, housing type, travel time to destinations you choose, and amenities.
- Results show why they appeared. Every comparison output explains which of your selected criteria produced it, so nothing is hidden or inferred.
- No recommendations. We never tell anyone where they should live, never rank communities as better or worse for any group of people, and never ask about — or attempt to infer — protected characteristics.

How to report a fair-housing concern
If you believe you have experienced housing discrimination — on this site or anywhere else — you can file a complaint:
- U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD): hud.gov/fairhousing or 1-800-669-9777.
- North Carolina Human Relations Commission: handles complaints under the North Carolina State Fair Housing Act.
